Workshop Cyber Security and Women Safety

It is a common experience that the social evil of eve-teasing is often ignored in our society. The orthodox views about gender relations, poor institutional support to victims and lack of self-confidence amongst women are some of the key reasons as to why eve-teasing continues to haunt women in public as well as private spaces. The UP Police established a 24@7 Contact Center in Lucknow, called the WPL 1090 to provide the opportunity to girls in UP to freely register complaints of eve-teasing and set up an innovative ICT-based application to process and redress their complaints. Thus, to sensitize students CMS Aliganj Campus II organized the workshop on cyber security and women safety on 27 November 2021 by the Team from Women Power Line 1090.

A training and sensitization team talked and gave demos on the topics/ issues like cyber sensitization, general behavioral, women safety, cyber security and self-defense. They inform students that cyberbullying is bullying that takes place over digital devices like cell phones, computers and tablets. Cyberbullying can occur through SMS text and apps or online in social media forums of gaming where people can view participate in or share content. Cyberbullying includes sending posting and sharing negative harmful false or mean content, sharing personal or private information about someone causing embarrassment or humiliation. Some cyberbullying crosses the line into unlawful and criminal behaviour. The students were sensitized on the same through short videos and demonstrations. They were also taught a few moves relating to self-defense not only for girls but also for boys and also for people in need.

The students were given refreshments and a folder with a pamphlet bearing necessary information about the topics taken up in the session. The students enjoyed the presentation and quenched their doubts regarding the self-defense techniques that they can learn at their age. They went home happy and educated inculcating and understanding the importance of SDG’s 3, 5, 10, 11, 16 and 17. They understood that safety and security don’t just happen, they are the result of collective consensus and public investment.
