“To know a language is to have one more window from which we can look at the world.”

English Language Day is celebrated on 23 April at the UN, the date is traditionally observed as both the birthday and date of death of William Shakespeare. The Day is the result of a 2010 initiative by the Department of Global Communications, establishing language days for each of the Organization's six official languages. The purpose of the UN's language days is to celebrate multilingualism and cultural diversity as well as to promote equal use of all six official languages throughout the Organization. The day was observed by the Junior wing of City Montessori School Aliganj 2 Campus with zeal and enthusiasm on 23rd April 2021.

The day began with a very informative PPT presentation on the biography of William Shakespeare by the students which was followed by the video of one of his famous plays “The Merchant of Venice” along with the quiz based on it. The students came dressed as their favourite characters from William Shakespeare’s plays and spoke a few lines introducing that character. They made beautiful sketches of William Shakespeare and also enjoyed an interactive session with their librarian Ms. Shagufta Khan where they came to know about some facts of William Shakespeare’s life like he did not have any female member in this company, female characters were always played by the male members, his date of birth and death is same etc.

The main aim to observe this day was to make students aware of the importance of the English language and throw light on the life of William Shakespeare, the great English dramatist and poet who gave so many words to the English language through his beautiful works.
