Astronomy Club Session - Nursery-KG

Track of celestial objects: orbits

In this session, the students learn about the movement of planets around the sun in our solar system. The students learnt about the revolution motion of the planets and also learnt that all the planets follow fixed imaginary paths around the sun which are known as orbits. The session ended with an activity where the students try to move remote controlled cars within the boundaries of a track.

Space Memory

This session reiterated the words that the students have learnt or have been introduced to during their previous sessions of astronomy. The session highlighted new vocabulary learnt by the students in a definition format and ends with a quiz that tests their retention power.

Planet Colors

In this session students learnt about the colours of all the planets in our solar system through a multimedia session. They learn that like our planet earth is Blue-green in colour, all the planets are of different colours. They also played a game in which they identified planets by their appearance and some of its distinct features and through the planet ball game they also established this understanding that the planets are round in shape. This was followed by another session in which the students pained their favourite planets and took them home.

Luminous and Non Luminous

In this session, the students learnt about luminous and non luminous objects. Through a story, they learnt the basic difference between luminous and non luminous objects i.e. the objects which have their own light and the ones which do not. The students also learnt about some objects in particular which seem to be lit but do not possess their own light like the moon. Later, they were given some examples of luminous and non luminous objects from our daily lives to understand and differentiate them easily. The session ended with an activity where the students have to pick out luminous and non luminous objects from a collection of cut outs of different objects.

Our Galactic Home

In this session students learnt that our solar system is present inside a galaxy known as Milkyway. They learnt that the shape of our galaxy Milkyway is Spiral. They also learnt that a galaxy is a group of stars and our sun is one of those stars. This multimedia session was followed by an activity in which students created their own galaxy on a paper which helped them to register the shape of our galaxy.

Astronaut

In this session students learnt what is an astronaut and what do they do. They learnt that an astronaut wears a special suit which is called space suit. They also learnt what physical strengths a human being should have to become an astronaut. After this they were given some challenges through which they understood that astronauts require a level of physical fitness to survive in space like balance, muscular strength and lungs strength because when astronauts go into space and return to earth, they experience challenges with balance and body control due to changes in gravity.

Zero Gravity

In this session students learnt about the importance of gravity. They also learnt that there is no gravity or zero gravity in space due to which everything is floating there. This was followed by an activity in which the students learnt that gravity is actually the pull of the Earth and everything on earth is attracted towards it surface. No matter how hard we throw things upward they eventually fall down on the surface.

Weather

In this session students learnt about weather. They learnt about different weather conditions like Sunny, rainy, cloudy, etc. They also understood the difference between seasons and weather conditions i.e. season changes throughout the year but weather conditions change everyday. After this the students picked their favourite weather conditions and described what happens during that weather and also narrated stories about what they like doing during different weather conditions.

Friends Forever

In this session students learnt that the motion of earth around the sun and that of moon around the Earth is called revolution and the path on which they are revolving is called an orbit. They also learnt about the appearance of the Sun , Earth and moon.

Directions

In this session, the students were introduced to local (left and right) and cardinal directions (North, South, East and West). The students also learnt the importance and need of having fixed directions and used a compass to locate these directions. The session concluded in a game in which the students used their learning for various fun challenges.

Power of Magnets

In this session students learnt about magnets and its fundamental properties through a multimedia session. They explored their surroundings to find out the various magnetic and non-magnetic materials. After this they played a game using a pair of magnets to understand attractive and repulsive properties of magnets and took that game home.

Shape of the Earth

In this session, students learnt about the shape of our planet Earth. They learnt about the difference between a circle and a sphere. They were told that the shape of earth is sphere or round and not circular. They also understood that circle is a flat figure while sphere is like a ball. This gave them an idea of 2D and 3D shapes. After this they performed an activity in which they learnt to identify various shapes by touching them. This enhanced their senses and psychomotor skills.

Star Patterns

In this session students learnt about stars and group of stars i.e. constellations. They heard mythological stories behind some famous constellations. Students also learnt the correct shape of a star and the celestial objects which have their own light. After this they made some famous constellations and took it home. They were also given worksheets to be done at home.

Magical eyes

This session was all about different optical devices that can be used to see far away objects. Students learnt the basic differences between binoculars and telescope through a multimedia session. After this they observed different objects through binoculars and telescope and analysed how the view of the same object is different through both the devices. They were also given a very interesting worksheet to be done at home.

Satellites

In this session students learnt what is a satellite. They learnt about the different types of satellites based on their uses and also about some famous satellites sent in space and how do they make our lives easier. They understood the importane of satellites and also learnt about different parts of a satellite and their uses. This was followed by an activity of making a satellite model using paper cups, straws, foil etc.

Learning Outcomes of the session

  1. Students learnt what is a satellite.

  2. Students learnt about the parts of a satellite and their uses.

  3. Students learnt about the different types of satellites based on their purpose.

  4. Students learnt about some famous satellites.

  5. Students learnt about the importance of satellites and how they make our lives easier.

  6. Students learnt how to make a satellite.

Solar System

In this session students learnt about the planet names and physical appearance of different planets. This was followed by playing a game known as "Ring the Planet".

Dark Patches

In this session students learnt about light and shadows. They learnt that shadows are actually an absence of light. The session was followed by a fun activity of making hand puppets wherein the students made different figures by blocking the light from a light source.

Knowing our Sun

In this session students learnt about the shape and color of the Sun and also that direct observations of the Sun are harmful for our eyes. This was followed by observing the Sun safely using solar view goggles and taking those goggles home. They were also given a worksheet to be done at home.

Let's make a Rocket

In this session students learnt about the principle of rocketry, by participating in a balloon rocket race. This was followed by making their own air rockets and launching them.

Rocket- A Space Vehicle

In this session students learnt about Rocket and its parts and the shape of each part through a multimedia session. This was followed by a straw rocket race. They were also given a worksheet to be done at home.

Home Away From Home

In this session students discovered that there is a home for astronauts in space called the International space station (ISS). They were amazed to see how astronauts carry out their daily activities like brushing, bathing, standing etc. on ISS and how it is different or similar to our lives on the Earth.
