The Commonwealth is made up of 54 countries around the world The Commonwealth is a voluntary association of independent countries spread over every continent and ocean. Its 2.4 billion people account for more than 30 per cent of the world’s population, and are in Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Americas, Europe and the Pacific. They are of many faiths, races and cultures.
Commonwealth Day is an annual celebration of the Commonwealth association and its members. Focusing on a different theme each year, it takes place on the second Monday in March. Its purpose is to promote understanding about global issues, international co-operation and the work of the modern Commonwealth.
The theme for the 2022 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), for Commonwealth Day and for the work of the Commonwealth more generally is
Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming
This theme was chosen because the governments and people of our diverse family of 54 Commonwealth countries connect at many levels through extensive and deep-rooted networks of friendship and goodwill.
Together, the countries and people of the Commonwealth tackle climate change and its impacts. We work to find sustainable ways of using the natural resources of our planet, its land and ocean, so that our environment is protected.
Together, we work to build peace and harmony through social and democratic development.
Together, we encourage inclusive economic empowerment and fair trade so that all people, particularly women, young people and those in marginalised communities can share the fruits of progress and prosperity.
Together, we are delivering a common future by connecting, innovating and transforming our societies.
Over the coming week, as we celebrate the friendship, spirit of unity and achievements of the Commonwealth, we have an opportunity to reflect on a time like no other.
Too often, too many of us can think we’re powerless. This is particularly true in the face of seemingly insurmountable challenges such as climate change...
Connecting at all levels
Through networks all around
Aspiring to progress and to achieve
Justice, good governance,
talents skills now purely used
to build a world
where trust and goodness rules.
Connecting at all levels
Through networks all around
Aspiring to progress and to achieve
Justice, good governance,
talents skills now purely used
to build a world
where trust and goodness rules.
Delivering a Common future
With toil and true concern
Together now to serve with love and care
Peace and Joy, its comfort
Constantly to Prevail.
And good will among nations
to be shared.
Innovations to be done
That’s good for everyone
Growing and improving on and on
Avenues good for Youth,
Concern for women too
Tolerance, understanding
Among all.
The world now seeks your mettle
To do and co-operate
To build it up with care
and expertise
Environment to protect
and nature to preserve
its resources wisely used
for health and life.
The Commonwealth does connect
with nations all around
working in great spirit
and with zeal.
Transforming for the better
Bringing all together
To prosper and to live
And work to heal.
Long live the great Commonwealth
The Head of the great Commonwealth
Long live Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth
Long live Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth
Long live Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth
