At CMS Indira Nagar, extensive plantation drive was planned for this month and the children were told to plant a sapling each in and around their homes. The school also acquired 40 new plants. Model class presentation had value based items concerning conservation of natural resources. Meter readings were taken on all working days. At CMS Anand Nagar, a letter has been sent to the forest department requesting them to plant trees around the campus and the park in the locality nearby. The purpose is to make the area greener and contribute towards conservation of resources and environmental protection. At Rajajipuram Campus I, essay writing competitions and collage contests were organised for juniors and seniors. An activity based the water closets, taps, toilets, garden area to check for any leakage or open taps was conducted. Children planted saplings in their homes and are happily taking care of them. In the model classes of juniors and seniors, water and energy conservation projects were highlighted. Similarly at CMS Rajajipuram II, children of different classes planted saplings in and around their houses. Around 100 children of the Campus actively participated in this project. Children were also told about ways to minimize energy consumption by use of CFL's and switching off the fans and lights when not in use besides being instructed on how to fill their bottles without spilling water. At CMS Asharfabad, the team members went to the various classes and spoke to the students about the importance of the water and energy auditing. SUPW classes (class VI to VIII) were utilized for getting one audit on energy and one on water during August. Children visited their neighborhood for generating awareness of water and energy conservation. Slogans and quotations were written and stuck near water taps and switch boards. For reuse of water, the system was attached to the rain harvesting device. At CMS Kanpur Road, energy and water audits were conducted. All efforts were made to generate awareness amongst students regarding the need to save water and energy. 300 children planted trees and others were provided saplings for plantation in their neighborhood. At CMS Aliganj I and II, several steps were taken for environmental protection. These included observations by students to check leakage, encouragement to students to do meter reading at home. Students noted the number of CFL/ tube lights/LED lights used in school. Speech, collage and slogan writing competitions were organised. Energy audit work progressed. There is a water boring supply in the campus which is used in swimming pool, gardening and filling water tanks. Water conservation practices adopted in school included checking of overflows and repairing leakages, installation of some drop taps, dual flush system for all closets, cleaning of toilets 2-3 times a day, flush system in urinals, exhaust fans and ventilation in toilets, use of bio-disinfectants and deodorants. At CMS Chowk Campus, Audit teams were formed and they actively audited the water and energy consumption in the Campus as per instructions given. Awareness was created amongst students regarding the need to save water. CMS RDSO sensitized its students through skits, role plays and group-discussions based on Energy Conservation, Global Warming and Water Conservation. Junior class students used empty Soda Water Bottles for calculating and practical understanding of wastage of water.Classes VI and VII counted the number of tube lights, fans, ACs and other electronic gadgets. At all the three CMS Mahanagar campuses, starting from Mahanagar I, Water and energy audit teams were formed. Awareness was created among the students regarding the need to save water and energy. At CMS Mahanagar II, approximately, 220 students planted saplings at home and in surrounding areas. On 15 September, children planted saplings in a plot adjacent to the campus. CMS Mahanagar III organised Geofest International and National Geography Olympiad to create an awareness regarding environmental protection. Students took a solemn pledge to save Mother Earth from pollution and environmental degradation. At CMS Jopling Road, the average monthly consumption of energy for the campus was calculated. Awareness for water and energy conservation was created at the school assembly. Children visited a nearby village and were sensitized about the water saving project. At Rajendra Nagar I, II and III, Water conservation practices adopted in school included installation of float valves, in all tanks to stop overflow, plugging of leakages in water pipelines and taps in school, keeping handwash /soap near ablution taps, cleaning of toilets 4-5 times a day, installing flush system in urinals, fixing exhaust fans or ventilation measures in toilets, use of disinfectants and deodorant etc. Various activities were carried out to create awareness amongst students regarding environmental protection. Water, the source of life and energy on planet earth, needs to be conserved. It is rightly said that 80% of the earth is covered by water or ice. 95.5% of the water on earth is salty ocean and 1.5 of it is frozen. The remaining 1% is available to meet human needs. Of this, less than 1% of the treated drinking water is actually consumed by people. Most of it goes for lawns, showers and tubs, toilets etc. One can live without food for some days but not without water. Water is life and we must do all we can to save it. CMS has launched a massive drive to save water. On the one hand it is enforcing the three pronged strategy of reduce, reuse and recycle water, while on the other hand it is also making efforts to preserve ground water by rainwater harvesting, preparing a plan for reverse boring and by creating an awareness amongst the students, parents and teachers on how to save water at home, in school and in society. The month of August was full of intense activity as CMS water audit teams at the campuses went all out to raise awareness and check wastage of water in school. Energy mainly comes from electricity in school. It depends entirely upon us as to how efficiently we use our fans, coolers and AC’s. Do we switch off the fans and lights when we leave the room? Can we do without the AC when the weather is cool and nice? Children must be made aware of the need to save energy so that it is not wasted. Meter reading is a common practice at home and in school but truthfully, many of us are still to learn, even as adults, on how to read the meter correctly. CMS, once again, takes the initiative to educate children and adults in this simple, but very useful, procedure. So out with your pens and notebooks and get ready to make a difference! 1. CMS Gomti Nagar I CMS Gomti Nagar, water and energy audit teams were formed. Water conservation practices were adopted so that water was not wasted.
