City Montessori School, Station Road Campus had a wonderful day on 10th September, 2021 by sharing an amazing dialogue session through Video Conferencing. This Video Conference was organized by the team of Generation Global between four schools. The participating countries were UAE and India. And the schools were from Indonesia, City Montessori School, Mahanagar Campus and City Montessori School, Station Road Campus.
Around, 12 students from various sections of Class VII participated in this VC. The topic of the VC was “Festivals”. The objective of this dialogue session was that the students will have the opportunity to share and learn about Festivals in different global contexts and can put into practice their key dialogue skills. Also, the students share and enquire together how they celebrate or mark festivals and other special days. There will be space to explore together what students’ value most about these special days, including special meanings for themselves of their wider communities.
In the first part, all the students from various schools had a sharing session where they shared their thoughts and feelings on - What is a festival that you and/or your community take part in and how do you participate? Why is this festival important to you and your community? And, what values or meanings influence this festival and how does it impact your culture or community? Students had so much to share with each other that this session went longer than the expected duration.
Later on, the dialogue went deeper when children started their sharing and enquiry together on the stories or events behind these special holidays or festivals. They discussed on what is done on these occasions but also why these days are celebrated or marked in these special ways. Few children talked about their favourite festivals like Makar Sankranti, Christmas, Holi, Diwali, Janmasthmi, etc.
All students displayed a very good understanding on the topic and were eager to share their experiences and perspectives with their peers. Students shared their experiences with so much openness and acknowledged each other's thoughts by expressing agreement and citing what others have said earlier. The questions put forward by the students were very concrete which resulted in the spontaneous responding. Students built a dialogue thread on questions- How these festivals bring positivity, closeness in you and your community. Are the stories behind these festivals true, if yes then to which extent? etc
And finally, it was the reflection session where two students from each school expressed their views on what they will take away from this dialogue. One of our children shared his reflection as- “It was great to connect with you all. Through this video conference, I got to know about the favourite festival of my friends and even I got to know how beautifully and enthusiastically these festivals are celebrated in your community.”
