CMS Guiding Principles — A Broader, Bolder Education

'A Broader, Bolder education acknowledges that every child is potentially capable of becoming a light of this world.'

Some of the guiding principles of a Broader, Bolder education are:

a. A Broader, Bolder education aims to bring out the best and highest in human nobility.
b. A Broader, Bolder education acknowledges that every child is potentially capable of becoming a light of this world. A Broader, Bolder education further inoculates a child against becoming its potential darkness.
c. A Broader, Bolder education makes a child a collaborator in his / her own growth process and in the development of community.
d. A Broader, Bolder education provides non-sectarian spiritual direction, guidance and leadership to its students, their parents and society in general.
e. A Broader, Bolder education is a continuous and creative process. Its aim is to develop the capacities latent in human nature and to coordinate their expression for the enrichment and progress of society by equipping children with material, human and spiritual education.
f. A Broader, Bolder education also acts as a powerful instrument of profound social transformation.

TS Eliot once wrote: "Education must help us escape from the present limitations of our own time."

  • Increasingly, it is becoming evident that education should be examined in the light of its contribution to individual growth and to bring about fundamental structural changes in society, changes which are necessary for the creation of a just, peaceful and harmonious environment.

  • Education in terms of knowledge, qualities, skills, attitudes and capacities must enable individuals to become conscious subjects of their own growth and active and responsible participants in a systematic process of building a community.

  • A modern school needs also to concern itself with the affairs of the age in which we live. The purpose of education is the redemption of mankind from its ills, its confusion, its conflict and its disunity.

  • A school in the 21st century must be a Lighthouse of Society, providing meaningful education, spiritual direction, guidance and leadership to students, parents and society at large.

Such a Broader, Bolder education releases capacities, develops analytical abilities, confidence in oneself, will power and goal setting competencies and instills the vision that will enable a child to become, one day, a self-motivated agent of social transformation.

A school implementing Broader, Bolder education has a proactive, forward-looking agenda. At the centre of this agenda is the transformation of both the individual child and society.

A Broader, Bolder educational does not, therefore, stop at educating the child. Numerous avenues are utilized to involve, educate and influence parents and the community. Schools must not only take a leadership role, they must also be supported in these goals by others.

'Education must enable individuals to become conscious subjects of their own growth and responsible participants in a community.'
