National Geography Olympiad is an event for developing interest of students in Geography. Geography is part of Humanities with a scientific base. On one hand, it deals with Man and his environment, on the other hand, it studies the causes and effects of various natural phenomena occurring on our Earth's surface. For quite some time, people have considered this subject related to mere map reading or its study. But over the years, it has gained immense importance, specially in the wake of global warming due to climatic changes on account of man's interference in the natural phenomena.
The terms Acid rain , Stone Cancer , Global Warming, Deforestation, Soil Erosion, Extinction of Animal species, Pollution, Green House Effect etc have become household themes, since the time people have come to understand these global issues. Mass awareness has also been created amongst the people to conserve precious physical and biological environment. Keeping the above in view and to develop the sense of belongingness for our mother earth, GEOFEST was started in the year 2002. Now in the 11th year since its inception, it has become a worldwide event with nearly 90 National and International teams taking part in it . GEOFEST INTERNATIONAL & NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY OLYMPIAD are two different events conducted simultaneously. GEOFEST INTERNATIONAL has helped us to cultivate friendship and brotherhood across our country and even beyond national boundaries. NATIONAL GEOGRAPHY OLYMPIAD is a platform to groom Indian students to enable them to compete in the international arena. The winners of National Geography Olympiad are eligible to represent India in NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP, organized by National Geographic Society U.S.A. In 2003, 2005, 2007 and 2009 four teams comprising the winners of National Geography Olympiad had participated in World Championship held at Tampa in Florida, U.S.A.; Budapest in Hungary; San Diego in California, U.S.A ,Mexico City, in Mexico and San Francisco, USA respectively.
