Report from Eco Club members of Rajendra Nagar Campus III  & their coordinator:

Parv Shrestha and Pankhuri Verma represented the Eco Club of the campus and shared their report as follows:

To mark the celebration of Festival of Lights various activities were held in school like Inter House Slogan Writing Competition, Placard Making Competition and making of paper bags. All the material prepared by the students was used in the Anti-Cracker and Pollution Free Diwali Drive. The students went to different vendors who were selling earthen lamps and candles and gave them handmade paper bags and requested them to avoid using plastic bags. In the end, the students also promised that they will celebrate a cracker free Diwali. The students and teachers of the Primary section visited Leelawati Orphanage and celebrated the festival of Lights with the children. The children had made their contribution by giving them rice, flour, biscuits, fruits, etc. to observe National Food Day as well. A special assembly was prepared by the teachers where the teachers and the Principal with the help of the cutouts of fruits presented a role play and explained the children the importance and the nutritious value of each fruit. A Fruit Recognition activity was held. An interactive session was organized by the Food Safety and Standard Authority (FSSAI) under the ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India. The session was a part of the campaign on Safe and Nutritious Food at School (SNF@School).  A Health and Hygiene activity was conducted in the Pre-Primary section. The children were guided and were helped to make a hygiene kit for themselves which contains a comb, a toothbrush, a towel, a small talcum powder pack, a cream and soap. After this they were taught to wash the towel napkins, squeeze them and hang them on rope for drying. A 'Fruit Break’ was introduced for the students from 9-10-17 in their timetable. A short, set break for the students during morning classes to snack on fruits or salads has been fixed in the Time Table from 9:45am to 9:55am. The aim for the Fruit Break is to ensure that all the students have some nutritious food early in the morning which aids their concentration and prevents hunger. The Curiosity Contest was conducted for the students of Classes VII and VIII in which the children participated with interest. The children were informed beforehand that the quiz will consist of twenty five questions related to three channels namely Animal Planet, Discovery Channel and Discovery Science. The results were declared on 14-10-17 and the children were felicitated by the Principal and the team of Discovery Channels.

International Environment Olympiad (IEO), Gomti Nagar Campus II:

Mrs. Shalini Srivastava, Environment Coordinator of Gomti Nagar II campus informed all other coordinators about the IEO.  She informed that a team of 5 junior and 5 senior can participate. One day prior to inaugural ceremony on 8 December, Environment Coordinator along with 4 eco club members have to put softboard on the topic that they have selected by picking chits. Softboard will be judged and prizes will be given on the presentation, creativity, innovation and theme covered.

A query was raised about a cooking competition in which all the team leaders have to participate. It was informed that the participants will have to bring utensils and ingredients on their own; cooking area and gas burner/stove will be provided by the organizers.

Suggestions:

Prof. Geeta Gandhi Kingdon asked the coordinators to focus on Practical Analysis and not just on theoretical teaching. She explained this through example of measurement of volume of water tank which requires help of both mathematics teacher as well as the environment coordinator of the campus. It implies integrated learning and not just subject based learning. She suggested that we can give such projects to the campuses which are of important nature, for example, to measure water quality. She requested Ms Kavita Shahi, coordinator of Kanpur Road campus to give one page report of methodology of water usage in the campus.

Another example was of how much power is consumed if we use a normal bulb versus CFL bulb versus LED bulb. She requested Ms Sukhwant Kaur, environment coordinator of Rajendra Nagar II campus to to find out that what will be the best device to measure power and how much will it cost? Will it be a voltmeter or a ammeter?

She demonstrated the mask and informed everyone about the serious pollution level in the city. Mr. Kailash Keswani of Aliganj I suggested that air quality device to be provided to all campuses and then report by environment coordinators of all campuses to be submitted to the Chief Minister. Prof. Geeta suggested that air pollution detector can be provided to the campuses on a rotational basis and requested Mr. Kailash and Ms. Samra, coordinator of Asharfabad campus to do a bit of air quality analysis/research over a period of week on morning, afternoon and night air quality and impact of pollution on human health and submit a report to her as to what can be done with the help of air quality measuring device. Mr. Keswani said that he will contact the Director of Pollution Control Board and request him to provide us with the machines.

Environment Dashboard:

The coordinators shared their feedbacks about report submission on the dashboard and gave their suggestions, for e.g., two report submission from Kanpur Road, editing options, etc.
The suggestions were further conveyed to the IT Portal Coordinator.

The meeting concluded with the remarks from Prof. Geeta Kingdon to learn all the skills of persuasion and congratulated everyone for their efforts and hard work.
