CMS Environment Coordinators’ Professional Learning Community

A monthly review meeting of all CMS Environment Coordinators was held on Wednesday, 28th March 2018. Mrs. Farida Vahedi chaired the meeting and welcomed all the coordinators as well as the Eco club members (students) of Anand Nagar Campus.

 

Report from eco-club members of Anand Nagar:
Jeevisha Satish and Ayushi Srivastava represented the Eco Club of the campus which has 30 students in it and shared their report as follows:

The campus took initiatives for Swachhagraha campaign. World Water Day was observed on 22nd of March. Various activities were conducted in all the sections: skit in the special assembly by juniors and poster making and soft board display to focus attention on the importance of water. The day was celebrated to highlight these issues and appeal everyone to save water. Teachers educated the children about the importance of water, way of hand-washing, avoiding any wastage of water and 'saving water' message was spread. World Sparrow day was observed on March 20th to raise awareness about the importance of birds dwelling in urban areas. Sparrows have been companions of humans for centuries but are fast disappearing due to adverse human activities. In the special assembly the pre primary children were told about the cause. The eco club representatives mentioned that every Wednesday they organize environment meeting during assembly.

Report from other campuses:
Aliganj Campus II: The activities on International Water Day comprised of slogan writing, finger printing, pledge to save water, thumb printing, rally on save water, emptying the water bottles in the school garden by the children while going home. Beautiful soft boards were also prepared by the students to portray their feelings about the conservation of water. Teachers explained the importance of the Earth Hour day to the students and told them to learn the ways of saving electricity. On World TB Day, the students were explained about the causes, symptoms and precautions of TUBERCULOSIS in class.

Gomti Nagar Campus I: Pre-primary children celebrated World Pet Day with lot of enthusiasm knowing about the various pet animals and how to take care of them and protect them. Eco club members of junior section performed at "Swacch Shakti Sammelan 2018", a programme on International women's day organized by Swachh Bharat Mission (gramin). Students performed a street play 'Ek kadam swacchata ki ore’ and displayed an exhibition portraying the ideal village. Shruti of class 9th, an eco club member distributed new clothes to an orphanage which is being run by Mahila Kalyan Vibhag which has 38 people including kids, rape & acid attack victims. Pre-primary children celebrated World Kindness day with missionaries of charity. On 22nd February, the students celebrated National Science Day. They were informed and enlightened about the contribution of Indian scientists. Children visited Regional Science City to celebrate Sparrow day on 20th March .Eco club members participated in poster competition, the topic of which was Sparrow and host plant. There was a Talk Show held in the FM room of CMS Gomti Nagar I by the Eco Club Members of Class 9th. People from Water Saving Department joined in and students asked them questions about the present crisis of water. Some people from the Guari Village were also present who were made aware about steps of saving water in their locality. Charts were made by students to spread awareness among the masses to conserve water.

Gomti Nagar Campus II: The junior section students took initiative to venture in the field of Organic Farming. They keenly observed and learnt various techniques to enhance the organic vegetable gardening in environment friendly way. On 17 January 2018, in the proper guidance of the gardener, students sown the seeds of different vegetables like Spinach, Beetroot, Coriander, Mint, Cabbage, Chenopodium (Bathuwa), Tomato, etc. The students were asked to adopt anyone plant of their choice and take care of it on daily basis. While going back home they always made a point to take a look at their plant and nurture it. In this way they were able to yield these organic vegetables which are fertilizers and pesticides free because as manure they used compost made in CMS GN-II compost pit. The basket used for storing these vegetables is also environment friendly made out of old used towel and plaster of paris.

Indira Nagar Campus: Sparrow Day was celebrated by Pre Primary section in which they were taught how to be caring towards the birds in this summer by giving them water and food. Students made Head Gears and presented a skit in their assembly on how to save sparrows.  Wild Life Week was celebrated by Classes 1 and 2. Class 1 were taught to make animal drawings with alphabets and class 2 made Animal Masks and told how they could be sensitive towards animals by not hurting or doing any harm to them. World Water Day was observed by the children of class III to V. Students made drawings, wrote poems and slogans for the environment board.

Jopling Road Campus: A sensitive video on acute water shortage in Capetown was shown to students from classes 3 to 8. The students also gave their feedback on the video shown to them. The students of Junior Section prepared projects on Integrated learning to highlight how the Environment Project is related to different subjects in the school curriculum. For Divine Seminar a skit on "SAVE THE GIRL CHILD" was presented by the students of Junior Section .A dance recital by mothers and daughters was also performed to spread this message to the community at large as it strengthens the social aspect of education for Sustainable Development with a multiple perspectives approach.

Mahanagar v: World water day was observed on 22nd March in primary and junior sections. Students of junior sections prepared thought provoking posters to create awareness about the importance of water conservation for a sustainable future. Students of primary sections gave the same message by preparing beautiful hand bands and head gears with water drop and save water message. Eco club members of junior wing prepared beautiful and durable cloth bags from old and used clothes which can be used as an alternative to polythene bags. Through this activity they also learned about the importance of reuse of materials and reduction of waste generation.
Rajajipuram Campus I: Students of class II took active part in explaining the importance of using the cloth bag over polythene bags. Students of class KG observed World Forest Day to understand the importance of plants and trees. World Water Day was also observed in the assembly where the students pledged to save water by turning off the tap when not in use. Students of Primary section created wonderful things using the waste material. Eco club members suggested various ways to stop plastic pollution, for e.g., use jute and paper bags instead of polythene, reuse reusable plastic bottles and avoid the use of CDs. Teachers explained the students about how we can save energy in our school as well as in our home.

Rajajipuram Campus II: Children were welcomed whole heartedly on the first day of the school. They did craft activities like pasting of photographs, finger printing, drawing, colouring etc. They were motivated to eat fruits daily. Special assembly was conducted in Pre-Primary section in which the Use of Dustbin was shown and children were asked to throw the waste paper, wrappers and other scrap material in the dustbin. Importance of cleanliness and hygiene was also discussed. The first day of the session was celebrated as Vidya Ka Parv in the Primary and the Junior section. Importance of education was discussed and the students were guided how they can play an important role in saving the environment. Primary students gave a presentation on how to conserve our natural resources. Class 8 gave a presentation on Identifying Water Quality with Insects. They showed a video and a PPT explaining the importance and advantages of macro invertebrates in observing the percentage of pollution in water.

Rajendra Nagar Campus I: Videos regarding water conservation were shown to the students and awareness was spread among students to save water. Various activities were conducted to spread awareness about water conservation and uses of water

Rajendra Nagar Campus III: World Forest Day was observed at the campus on 22nd March 2018. Various activities and competitions were taken up during the day to educate the children about the importance and conservation of the woodlands and the green expanse. The children planted saplings in plastic bottles thus contributing towards afforestation and reusing the non biodegradable. World Water Day was observed to educate the children about the pivotal role of water in sustaining life and how important it is to conserve this natural resource. Tips like using the left over water in the water bottles to water the plants and getting the leaking taps repaired were given to children by the teachers. World Sparrow day was observed at the campus on 20th March and the children were educated about conserving this little creature as it has become endangered. They made beautiful bird feeders with waste materials and put them on the rooftop. World Meteorological Day was observed and a special Assembly was conducted on the occasion. Students were told about the different factors leading to climate change.

Ms Preeti Rawat from CEE, Lucknow joined the meeting with Ms Madhvi Joshi who has come from CEE, Ahmadabad. They shared the YRE poster with everyone and the guidelines for submission. They gave detailed information to everyone about:

 

A workshop by Mr. Amir Raza on Sustainable Development:
A one-hour workshop was organized by Mr. Amir Raza on the important topic of Sustainable Development. The topics discussed were:

Mr. Roshan Gandhi joined the meeting for some time. The meeting concluded with a congratulatory remark from Mrs Farida Vahedi.
