Group discussion and speeches marked the celebrations of World Environment Day at the Head Office of City Montessori School, Lucknow here today. The speakers strongly raised the issue of spreading awareness on the depleting environment and increasing pollution in the world. The theme of the World Environment Day this year is 'Seven billion dreams, One planet, Consume with Care' which clearly signified the importance of maintaining a balance between economic growth and environmental conservation. The main speakers and participants included renowned educationists and Founders of CMS, Dr Jagdish Gandhi and Dr (Mrs) Bharti Gandhi; President of CMS, Prof. Geeta Gandhi Kingdon; former IAS Shri V N Garg, HOD of CMS Personality Development Department, Mr Shishir Srivastava, Editor of CMS Bulletin Dr Preeti Shankar and others. The speakers expressed their grave concern over deteriorating environmental conditions in the world, their causes and possible solutions which may be adopted by the governments in their policies and people in daily life.
President of CMS, Prof. Geeta Gandhi Kingdon said that education of girls is of prime importance as educated girls can contribute to sustainable development by raising their voice and supporting small families and high quality in life. Small families will lead to less pressure on the usage of natural resources. Each one of us should have at least one dream of upgrading the environment and we should be ready to sacrifice for the sake of fulfilling our dream. Mr V N Garg, former IAS, said that the rate at which world population is growing is alarming and by 2050, we will need three planets to sustain life at the present rate of growth. Our resources are limited and reckless exploitation of the earth's resources will ruin the earth leading to total devastation.
