City Montessori School to be honoured with UNESCO Prize for Peace Education- 2002

The Director General of UNESCO, Mr Koichiro Matsuura, awarded the "UNESCO Prize for Peace Education-2002" to City Montessori School, Lucknow, following recommendations by the International Jury. The International Jury commended the school for its efforts to promote the universal values of education for peace and tolerance and to renew the principles of secularism at a time when these values and principles are increasingly being challenged.
The Founders of City Montessori School have been invited to receive the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education-2002, comprising $30,000 (US), at an official ceremony being organised by UNESCO at its headquarters in Paris on 23rd September, 2002. CMS Founder-Manager, Mr Jagdish Gandhi, and the Founder-Director, Dr (Mrs) Bharti Gandhi, will receive the award at the UNESCO Headquarters, Paris (France). UNESCO is sending two return air tickets and they will be the guests of UNESCO. The UNESCO award is the highest honour in the world in the field of education.
The founder-manager of CMS, Mr Jagdish Gandhi and the founder-director, Dr (Mrs) Bharti Gandhi have given the entire credit for this historic achievement to CMS principals, teachers, students and their parents who had been working as a family for inculcating the values of "Vasudhaiv Kutumbakam" and "Jai-Jagat" for bringing world unity and world peace through the help of a large number of peace related international events and activities during the last 43 years. Mr Gandhi said that CMS teachers put in their best to make every child both "good and smart", "a gift of God to mankind," "a potential light of the world" and "a pride of the human race". They inspire children to know their Creator and to love all human beings created by Him. For their hard work and consistent efforts, UNESCO, has conferred this distinctive honour for the first time in its history, on an educational institution.
The Ministry for Human Resources, Government of India, had recommended City Montessori School, Lucknow, for the UNESCO Prize for Peace Education-2002, for its outstanding contribution in imparting peace education to the children for over 43 years. CMS was chosen for this prestigious global prize by UNESCO's International Jury from amongst the nominations sent by various national governments from all over the world. It may be mentioned that this prize has been given to India for the third time: General Indrajeet Rikhi received it in 1985 and Mother Teresa in 1992.
For the last 43 years CMS has been imparting value-based quality education along with education for world unity and world peace. This humane, scientific and logical approach of CMS is responsible for the outstanding success of her students in all fields of knowledge. Students of CMS have also been visiting nearby villages and contributing to the growth of literacy, health and education in rural areas.
Inspired by the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and Vinoba Bhave, Mr Gandhi, a young visionary, and his wife, Dr (Mrs) Bharti Gandhi, founded CMS in 1959 with five children. However, with dedication and commitment of the Gandhi couple, CMS became a progressive and fast developing school. In 1999 it was recognised as the world's largest school by pupils in a single city by the Guinness Book of World Records. Currently more than 26000 students are enrolled in the school.
This prestigious award is given annually to person or institution of the world contributing the maximum towards world unity and world peace. It may be mentioned that in matters of education, science and culture, the UNESCO is the highest body of the United Nations.
The founder of CMS, Mr Jagdish Gandhi, has received many prestigious awards and honours in the field of education. He was awarded the Derozio Award for value based quality education by the Council for the Indian School Certificate Examination (ICSE Council), The Haji Waris Ali award for National Integration and UP Ratan Award for value based quality education.
