I shall begin with a prayer (Gayatri Mantra) on such an important occasion:
Om Bhur Bhuwah Swah, Tatsavitur
Varenyam Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi
Dhioyonah Prachodayat
O God, the giver of life
Remover of pain and sorrows
Bestower of happiness
And Creator of the Universe
Thou art most Luminous
Pure and adorable
We meditate on there
May thou inspire and guide our intellect in the right direction
First of all. I would like to say how honoured and privileged I am to have been given the opportunity to represent my country, the Republic of the Fiji Islands at this prestigious Conference of Chief Justices of the World.
This is the second time I am attending the Conference the first one was in the year 2002 and I have happy memories of that occasion.
Mr. Jagdish Gandhi is to be commended for his untiring efforts in pursuant of his desire to safeguard the future of the world's two billion children of the world and generations yet-to-be-born. It is no mean fact to muster the support of the world judiciary in such large numbers.
We as judges are here in Lucknow because we wholeheartedly support such a cause which has been undertaken by the students of City Montessori School under their valiant leader Mr. Jagdish Gandhi.
In the last two days many eminent persons from various countries have spoken on this year's theme, which is "empowering the International Court of Justice to safeguard the future of two billions children and generations yet-to-be-born". To save time and repetition, in legal language. I say that I concern and fully support the previous speakers on their views they have expressed on the theme.
The Acting Chief Justice of Fiji, the Hon'ble Mr. Justice Gates has sent a message for the occasion and this is contained in the present brochure already circulated to you.
There he said, inter alia: "as judges we come across children or youths in our courts who ought not to be there. For some of them it is already too late. They feel they have no future "we as judges are not law makers in the sense of legislators. Laws are chiefly the sphere of parliamentarians, senators and members of assemblies. The City Montessori School of Lucknow has called on the United Nations to establish a "New World Order" with enforceable International laws. Jagdish Gandhi has appealed to the world judiciary to use its authority.
In conclusion, I would like to make the following remarks. It is our bounden duty to listen to the cries of the children of the world for we cannot ignore their plight anymore, they (children) should have to greater say with affairs of the world concerning them; what was conceived as an idea of Mr. Jagdish Gandhi is now bearing fruit. He and his children have nor the nail or the head. We should strike while the iron is hot. It is time for action, action and action.
Now is the time to act and devise ways and means and work out a machinery to put the whole thing in motion now that we have the full support of the World Judiciary in fulfilment of the said Conference themes.
The CMS students have great expectations from judges of the world. It is hoped that we are able to comment or concern of the children into action.
Finally, on behalf of my wife and on my own behalf. I would like to take this opportunity of wholeheartedly thanking you, Jagdish Gandhi and the CMS students for looking after us so well for the duration of the Conference for which we shall be ever grateful to you all.
May God bless you every one.
