FIJI ISLAND
“I acknowledge your kind invitation to Hon.
Sir Timoci Tuivaga, the former Chief Juctice of Fiji, to
be the Guest of Honour at the 3rd International Conference
of Chief Justices of the World to be held at Lucknow from
6th-8th December, 2002. Your invitation letter dated the
31st August 2002 was received on 17th September.
I have only recently taken over from Sir Timoci Tuivaga
(since 1st August) and am still in the process of settling
in to the duties of my office and I regret to advise that
it will not be possible for me to attend this conference
owing to long-standing prior commitments.
I have perused the enclosed brochure and am
deeply touched and impressed by the pleas of young people
the world over for a safer and more secure future.
Recent world events since September 11, 2001 and its continuing
aftermath makes it all the more imperative that we heed
and actively respond to the pleas of the children of the
world.
Article 51 of the Constitution of India is
a forward-looking provision of immense significance both
nationally and internationally and it is timely and appropriate
that the Chief Justices of the world should meet and lend
their individual and collective support in furthering its
laudable aims.
I shall be following your deliberations with
keen interest and look forward to a fututre opportunity
when I might be able to attend in person.
On behalf of the Fiji Judiciary and on my
own behalf I would like to extend to you, the children of
City Montessori School and the conference participants,
our best wishes for a successful conference.”
With sincere regards.
